CASE STUDY: SCAS Sustainability Projects

CLIENT OVERVIEW 

South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS) provide emergency, urgent care and non-emergency healthcare services to patients across Berkshire,


Buckinghamshire, Hampshire and Oxfordshire (including non-emergency transport to patients in Surrey & Sussex). SCAS operates 24/7 and serves a population of over 7 million. 


PROJECT SCOPE 

SCAS has committed to reduce their carbon footprint, including the challenging target of switching their fleet 1,300 of vehicles to electric. In doing so SCAS will address 85% of their carbon emissions. 


SCAS sought a partner to help them develop their sustainability strategy, advising on the opportunities to implement solutions across their properties to reduce their carbon emissions. 

The completed projects, including Solar PV and EV charger installations, have future-proofed SCAS facilities, supporting the shift to electric vehicles and delivering long-term environmental and financial benefits. 


SEE SOLUTION 


SEE began by undertaking detailed surveys at each SCAS site. SEE methodically assessed opportunities to install and operate EV chargers, while also assessing further opportunities to reduce emissions, manage electrical demand and generate savings. The solutions assessed through these surveys included: 


Review HVAC timers, set temperature and condition to optimise performance 

Upgrading lighting (including existing LED) to reduce costs and emissions 

Opportunities to generate renewable power via onsite Solar PV installations. 


Based on these assessments, SEE proposed a series of sustainability solutions designed to work in tandem with the EV charger installations. These solutions are aimed at improving return on investment (ROI) while accelerating emissions reductions. 


SEE has continued its partnership with SCAS, undertaking further initiatives to enhance building performance and energy efficiency. This included: 


Fabric-first evaluations: SEE assessed the condition of buildings across the SCAS estate. At one site, the modern and well-maintained buildings made fabric upgrades less impactful. However, at another location, SEE recommended improvements to roof and wall insulation and airtightness to improve the EPC rating. 


EV Charger Installation: In August 2023, SEE installed three ROLEC 11kW 3-phase chargers (a combination of single and twin units) across 12 locations. 


Solar Panel Installation: SEE installed 630 solar panels on a Resource Centre’s low-pitch roof. These panels now generate clean, renewable energy that exceeds the site’s current electrical demand.
