CASE STUDY: HVAC Installation Project

CLIENT OVERVIEW 

Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust provides a wide range of acute and community healthcare services across Buckinghamshire. The Trust operates multiple clinical and non-clinical facilities, requiring high standards of compliance, safety, and operational continuity across all estates and infrastructure. 

PROJECT SCOPE 

SEE Services Limited was appointed via Direct Award under the NHS SBS Hard Facilities Management 2 Framework (Lot 5.1 – Ventilation and Air Conditioning) to deliver a new air conditioning and ventilation solution at the Trust’s Education Training Centre. 

The project involved the supply, installation, commissioning, and handover of a complete HVAC system within a live NHS environment, requiring careful planning to minimise disruption to ongoing operations. 

The scope included the installation of: 

Six wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units 

Three external condenser units mounted on cantilever wall frames 

Associated mechanical, electrical, and builders’ works. 

SEE Services delivered a fully integrated mechanical and electrical solution tailored to the operational needs of the Training Centre, ensuring compliance with NHS standards while improving environmental control, system efficiency, and user comfort. 

Delivered on programme within a live NHS environment, with full compliance, successful commissioning, and zero disruption to operations.  

SEE SOLUTION 

SEE Services managed the project from mobilisation through to handover, coordinating closely with the Trust, consultant team, and authorised ventilation personnel. Delivery followed a structured programme with weekly progress meetings and strict adherence to NHS compliance and safety standards, with works completed over a 2-week installation and commissioning period, followed by snagging and final handover within the third week. 

The scope of works delivered by SEE Services included: 

Installation of Mitsubishi Electric air conditioning systems 

Ventilation modifications and condensate drainage systems 

New electrical distribution, controls, and air quality systems 

Builders’ works, testing, commissioning, and full handover documentation 

Works were delivered using a coordinated, multi-disciplinary approach, with detailed RAMS, phased planning, and continuous stakeholder engagement to ensure safety, quality, and programme adherence throughout. 

CHALLENGES 

Several challenges were present during delivery: 

All works were carried out within a live operational NHS facility, requiring careful planning to minimise disruption, maintain safety, and ensure continuity of services at the Trust. 

Installation of external condenser units required safe roof access and the implementation of temporary edge protection, with strict adherence to health and safety procedures. 

Close coordination with Trust representatives and stakeholders was essential to align works with operational demands. This included managing restricted access times, scheduling deliveries and installation activities, and maintaining programme progress within a constrained environment, with flexibility for out-of-hours working where required.
