INDUSTRY INSIGHT OCTOBER 2025: How SEE Services is helping Royal Mail Deliver their Sustainability Goals

Royal Mail delivers to more than 32 million homes across the UK, six days a week. With most deliveries carried out on foot, the company is already one of the greenest last-mile delivery services. But Royal Mail has set its sights even higher, committing to become the UK’s greenest delivery provider.
A key part of that ambition is improving energy efficiency across its estate. That’s where SEE Services comes in. We’re working with Royal Mail to upgrade lighting systems across distribution and delivery offices, replacing outdated fluorescent lamps with energy-efficient LED lighting, a project that has already been recognised at the Facilities Management Awards UK 2025 in the Workplace Transformation category.
Why Royal Mail Partnered with SEE Services
SEE Services was recommended to Royal Mail following the successful delivery of large-scale LED lighting projects for a major UK retailer. After a competitive tender process, we were appointed as one of two contractors to deliver the upgrades across Royal Mail depots in the South East.
Delivering a Full-Service Solution
Our role covers every stage of the programme, ensuring Royal Mail benefits from a fully managed, end-to-end solution. This includes:
Designing and pricing the upgrades.
Procuring LED fittings in partnership with Royal Mail’s preferred supplier.
Installing LED fittings with integrated sensors to monitor and optimise efficiency.
Overseeing delivery with a dedicated Contract Manager and providing weekly updates.
Working at Scale
Depot requirements vary widely in size and complexity. Smaller sites typically need between 100 and 200 LED fittings, which can be installed in about a week. Larger depots may require up to 1,400 fittings and take around a month to complete.
Minimising Disruption
Royal Mail operates 24/7, so installations must be carefully planned. Our project teams work closely with site managers to schedule works during off-peak hours, minimising disruption to postal operations. Depending on the site, we deploy 2–5 electricians to complete works quickly and efficiently.
Progress to Date
So far, SEE Services has completed lighting upgrades at 19 depots, installing more than 8,000 LED fittings. The success of this first phase has paved the way for Phase 2, which is set to begin shortly and will further expand the impact across Royal Mail’s estate.
Recognition in the Industry
This project has also recognised at the Facilities Management Awards UK 2025, where it was a finalist for the Workplace Transformation category. Being named a finalist reflects the scale and impact of the programme, demonstrating how energy-efficient upgrades can make a tangible difference across essential workplaces.
