CASE STUDY: Multi site EV Installation

SCAS is electrifying their fleet of vehicles and sought a partner to install EV chargers across their estate.

CLIENT OVERVIEW 

South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS) provide emergency, urgent care and non-emergency healthcare services to patients across Berkshire,

Buckinghamshire, Hampshire and Oxfordshire (including non-emergency transport to patients in Surrey & Sussex). SCAS operates 24/7 and serves a population of over 7 million. 

PROJECT SCOPE 

SCAS has committed to reduce their carbon footprint, including the challenging target of switching their fleet 1,300 of vehicles to electric. In doing so SCAS will address 85% of their carbon emissions. 

SCAS sought a partner to provide a hassle-free service, managing the end-to-end provision of new EV charging infrastructure across their property portfolio. While not available for public use, SCAS do wish to provide their staff with access to the charging facilities. 

SEE SOLUTION 

SEE were appointed by SCAS to deliver the multi-site programme of works. Via a series of site surveys SEE assessed each site’s suitability for EV charging, including the available electrical supply infrastructure, car park layout and operational considerations. The survey findings enabled the programme of works and finalised costs to be developed and approved by the client. 

Installation of the EV chargers commenced in August 2023 and were completed in October 2023. The dedicated team appointed to complete the installation and commissioning included: 

Project Lead, managing the programme, overseeing QHSE and the point of contact for the client 

Electrical engineers, split into two sub-teams 

Civils team utilised where ground works required 

SEE RESULTS 

SEE delivered the programme of works within the agreed timeline and budget. Regular communication and updates with the client ensured we delivered a seamless ‘hands-off’ experience for SCAS. 

Installation completed at 12 sites 

Three chargers installed per site (ROLEC 11kW 3-phase chargers, single and twin) 

Two sites completed on average per week 

Further sites (requiring electrical supply upgrade) to be completed in Phase 2 

The new charging infrastructure will be utilised by the SCAS Patient Transfer electric fleet and will also be available for staff to utilise at a reduced rate.
